Twin Rivers Recovery is a residential treatment centre that has been assisting clients with addiction and mental health disorders since March 2011. Our uniqueness is based on our mindful response to client individuality, flexible approach regarding the recovery community’s daily needs and the clinical team’s overall ability to address addiction and mental health simultaneously in an effective, compassionate and respectfully challenging way.

WHY TWIN RIVERS RECOVERY?

Twin Rivers has been registered with The South African Department of Social Development since 2012 and accommodates a maximum of 12 clients at any one time allowing for essential individual attention that each client will need moving forward. This personal touch eludes many treatment centres who focus on volume and not necessarily on individual client care. This approach is much less intimidating for clients who often arrive feeling overwhelmed, uncertain and quite fearful.

Irvin, D, Yalom a highly famous and influential American psychiatrist, author, and emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford University and he states the following:

‘Group psychotherapy rests on the belief that people can benefit immensely from shared experiences in a group setting. It emphasizes the importance of interaction between group members as a driving force for change and growth. Group size affects a group’s consensus, effort, performance, idea production, cooperation, identity, problem solving, and stability and that the optimum number for group therapy is 8-12 members.

LOCATION

Twin Rivers Recovery Centre is in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, South Africa nestled on the world renown Garden Route which attracts millions of visitors each year. The Blue Flag beaches are a five-minute walk away from Twin Rivers and there are many attractions in the area including The Elephant Sanctuary-Birds of Eden (largest aviary in the world)-Jukani Big Cat Sanctuary and Monkey Land.

1-A unique blend of world class private healthcare facilities with tranquil environments that aid recovery. Locations like the Garden Route offer a slower pace of life and peaceful settings for mental rejuvenation. While private care is excellent, travellers should make sure they use registered facilities such as Twin Rivers Recovery.

2-South Africa is particularly popular for addiction and mental health care, cosmetic surgery, fertility treatment and dentistry for example, not only for the quality services but also because procedural costs are vastly less than in Europe and the United States. My 28 days at Twin Rivers taught me so much. I was fortunate to be supported by an incredible team of counsellors — Austin, AG, Michelle and Benton who each played an important part in helping me through those days. Thank you for your patience, guidance, support and for helping me get through some very difficult moments.

I am deeply grateful for the gift of being at Twin Rivers and for the opportunity to focus on getting well. I leave with lessons, tools and experiences that I will carry with me as I continue my recovery.

I write this review to anyone considering Twin Rivers for addiction treatment and recovery.

If you have made vain attempts to control your addiction to the point where you feel you have absolutely no hope for recovery then you are ready for rehab. And if Twin Rivers is a viable option then I advise you look no further.

As the dozens of dozens of heartfelt five-star reviews attest: this is a world-class treatment programme that will save your life provided you put your head down and do the work.

The therapy programme is rigorous, intense and comprehensive with group therapy sessions, private counselling, probing assignment work and a variety of supporting therapeutic modalities such as yoga, meditation, art and drama.

The weekly schedule also included three AA/NA meetings, four gym sessions, five sunrise beach walks and a Saturday activity (e.g. horse riding, whale watching, quad biking, archery, nature walk, animal sanctuary).

My treatment concluded on 31 August, 2026 and I can safely say the programme works. With the foundation and support provided by Twin Rivers I have complete confidence that I will stay clean and in recovery for the rest of my life.

Living with other addicts in confinement under strict house rules has its challenges but these too contribute to your personal growth and recovery.

Just don’t go there in denial expecting a wellness retreat with chocolates on your pillow and a magic pill to make the cravings go away. If that’s you then you will find fault with everything, the pettiest of inconvenience will derail your recovery and you will leave with nothing but resentment.

The staff were compassionate, patient, and genuinely invested in helping me heal. From the nurses to the therapists, everyone treated me with kindness and dignity, and they made me feel supported during a very vulnerable time in my life.

One thing I especially appreciated was that they incorporated activities like yoga and attending community meetings. Being able to practice those habits while in treatment made life on the outside feel more real and helped prepare me to continue my recovery after leaving. What sort of addictions do you cover?
Primarily, Twin Rivers is a Dual Diagnosis treatment centre which means that we treat addiction and mental health issues simultaneously. A more common example of this would be addressing alcohol and depression at the same time. Twin Rivers also treats ‘process addictions’ such as gambling or sexual addiction.  A ‘process addiction’ does not involve any kind of addictive substance so would also include addictions such as ‘video gaming’ or shopping addiction. Some clients have a ‘cross addiction’ which could be a combination of any two or more addictions.
The good news is though that no matter how long addiction has impacted your life there is always hope.
Why is Twin Rivers Rehab different to others?
Twin Rivers is NOT a clinical treadmill; rather a family orientated home, with pets that focuses on each client’s individual needs. Even though all our clients have addiction and mental health disorders (depression for example) what they need going forward does vary considerably.
How many counselling sessions will I get?
Individual counselling plays a pivotal role in addiction treatment by addressing psychological and behavioural aspects of the addiction cycle, providing emotional support and guidance necessary for a sustainable recovery and a better quality of life.
All clients receive two sessions of counselling a week with their focal counsellor as well as sessions with our psychiatrist.
Do You Help Clients with Their Mental Health?
Mental health is a vital component of overall health and well-being for everyone, especially for those suffering with an addiction disorder as well. Twin Rivers Dual Diagnosis Programme effectively addresses both addiction and mental health components whilst at the same time educating clients about the ‘management’ of both elements.
What will be expected of me?
All clients are expected to adhere to the house rules and expectations which are common sense based yet we understand that clients do not always pack their common sense when they come to Twin Rivers which is why we ask all clients to sign a ‘conduct contract’ which we can then refer too if the client has difficulties in adjusting to an environment with rules and time lines.
